Memory Matters CIC t/a Moments Cafe & Community Hub

Cause Name: Memory Matters CIC t/a Moments Cafe & Community Hub
Cause Type: Health
Cause Location: Plymouth
Cause Contact: Kate Smith
Cause Contact Position: Director

Cause Mission:

Moments is a working bistro/café downstairs and open to the public -  an environment for all to enjoy but thoughtfully designed to be dementia friendly.

Anyone can pop in for a cup of tea and reminisce or just enjoy looking at timelines around the walls, sitting in one of the specially designed decade zones (50’s, 60’s , 70’s and 80’s), each with objects on display from those eras. All the while enjoying home cooked familiar food that our parents and grandparents used to make!!

The added bonus of the café - all profits will be returned to provide services to those with dementia in our community – ensuring a sustainable service that does not rely on grants and therefore will not suddenly end.  The project will need everyone’s support to ensure its success

Children can enjoy the historic feel of the cafe, students will enjoy the retro element and for others it may be a walk down memory lane!

This is not a dementia café – it’s a café which offers both a social venue to meet for coffee or lunch and a place where you can go to get information without the stigma.

The Information Centre upstairs (accessed by a lift or stairs) will be a space for advice, information and support for those looking for information about dementia - this will be supported by Dementia Advisors from the Alzheimer’s Society.

The second floor aims to provide:

  • Activity Day Club, in partnership with Memory Matters SW CIC -  which provide research-based therapy for those living with dementia.
  • Information Sessions arranged using various agencies.
  • Dementia training for the public.
  • Statutory health service providing dementia nurse clinics
  • Alzheimer’s Society drop in Clinics
  • Access to research team
  • Free wills and power of attorney clinics with Law firms
  • A training centre with availability of a training / meeting room in City Centre to hire out for businesses
  • Tai Chi
  • Seated Exercise Classes

The Dementia Hub and Moments Café will be the cornerstone of the community work for Memory Matters in Plymouth. It will enable Memory Matters to have a face and a voice within the community giving those with dementia and their carers the opportunity to discuss dementia in a non-threatening and non-scary way.

We aim to use this hub to bring together dementia care providers and the public to create a sustainable source of information and support linking all providers. We are looking to all providers for their support and coactive working to benefit the people of Plymouth.

The initial business plan highlighted some key targets to reach, these have already been exceeded in the first 8 months.

Inital output targets:

Without the SEIF funding…the project would not have gone ahead
